September has always felt like a symbolic month to me. In the calendar, it sits at that pivotal point between the last lingering days of summer and the first crisp notes of autumn. It carries with it the balance of endings and beginnings: a time to say goodbye to summer’s ease while welcoming the new season’s promise.
For me, September is the second reset of the year. We often talk about spring cleans, but I always think of September as its own restart. It’s a moment for planning, preparation, and clearing the way so that the next three months—October, November, and December—can unfold more smoothly. Without that pause for order and organisation now, the run-up to Christmas can so easily become stressful and overwhelming.
This September, I’ve been busy creating a new workshop space for my botanical work. It’s meant a huge amount of maintenance, shifting furniture, designing new workbenches, and generally rebalancing the whole environment.
There’s been a lot of clearing out, tidying, and realigning, which feels very much in harmony with the spirit of the month. Of course, September can feel bittersweet too.
It marks the end of the summer holidays, which always brings a touch of sadness. But alongside that, I find it incredibly uplifting.
The new school terms begin, the air changes, and there’s a freshness that feels energising. It’s the gateway to autumn—my absolute favourite season.
Autumn in floristry is a joy. The colours are rich, deep, and inspiring, and they always excite me more than any other palette across the year.
In September, I know those autumn tones are close at hand, ready to fill the workshop with warmth and creativity. It’s also the moment to brace myself for the festive season ahead.
Our Christmas workshops—wreaths, table centres, and so many gatherings—are some of the most rewarding parts of the year, but they require immense preparation behind the scenes. September is the foundation for making all of that possible.
And then, on a personal note, I love the feel of autumn living: sweater weather, light layers, crisp walks, and the first golden leaves underfoot. It carries the same energy as spring in its sense of renewal, but with more depth, colour, and atmosphere.
So, for me, September is more than just a month. It’s a turning point, a chance to pause, re-set, and ready myself for everything to come. In the world of botanicals and floristry, it’s a time of intention—because when September is spent preparing, the seasons that follow can be enjoyed to their fullest.
Well that's the plan ...... I'll let you know in January how all the pre planning went !!!!
With love always, Cerus & The Botanicals Team
